Bio

Sofiya is a multi-media artist working in NYC. They were born in Almaty, Kazakhstan. There they studied art at the Kosteev School of Art and Design.

 

After moving to the US and finishing high school in Upstate New York, they began studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. There they received a BFA in Fine Arts in 2026.

 

In 2023, they participated in the In-Season exhibition at the Blooming Artist Gallery. And in the same year they were chosen to work alongside artist Peter Drake for a demonstration at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

 

In their work, Sofiya likes to explore themes of existing within the physical and metaphorical confines of the human body, and its relationship to the larger context of the world.​

 

Sofiya sees the human body not just as a part of a person’s self, but also a place - a place that can expand, contract, and a place we can invite others into, however futile the attempts might be. And they imagine that to be a rather isolating place, reflecting the idea of loneliness being the human condition.

Sofiya’s ideas are often informed by their choice of materials, and their tactile and symbolic qualities. Their list of materials ranges from charcoal, to epoxy resin, and even to electronics.
